Cycling is a great method of transport for so many reasons. Cycling offers riders great economic benefits, social benefits and of course health benefits! With all of these factors taken into consideration, we want to specifically draw attention to how cycling benefits the environment and why everyone should truly consider this method of transportation!
Cycling is so great for the environment as bicycles do not require any fuel, they require way less energy and resources to manufacture compared to a traditional vehicle and they do not rely on the use of harmful substances like motor oil or toxic batteries. When you take a look at their impact compared to cars on the road, the numbers are astounding. The following chart gives us a quick breakdown of an average 10-mile round trip commute 5 days a week for a year for a single vehicle:
Vehicle |
Gasoline |
Emissions |
Small Car |
68 Gallons |
.7 Tons of CO2 |
Midsize Car |
124 Gallons |
1.3 Tons of CO2 |
SUV/4×4 |
170 Gallons |
1.9 Tons of CO2 |
In addition to the emissions released solely from commuting, it is also important to consider that during a vehicle’s lifetime it can produce another 1.3 billion cubic yards of polluted air. Cars also scatter worn tire particles, brake debris and worn road surface into the atmosphere, exacerbate smoggy conditions in cities and contribute heavily to noise pollution.
So next time you consider riding your bike versus going for a drive, do the environment a solid and choose your bicycle!
